Prelude Strings
Prelude Strings (Prelude) is TYSA’s introductory string ensemble for students in grades 2–5 who are beginning their musical journey on the violin, viola, cello, or bass. In a fun, encouraging, and supportive environment, students develop fundamental string-playing skills while learning the basics of rhythm, note reading, posture, tone production, and ensemble performance. As they explore music together, young musicians build confidence, make new friends, and discover the joy of creating music as part of a team. Prelude Strings provides the foundation for continued growth in TYSA’s string orchestra program and is conducted by Ms. Katherine Sartori.
No prior musical experience is necessary to join!
Class Times
Weekly classes are held on Saturday mornings at Studio 1 in the Pantages Theater in downtown Tacoma from 10:45–11:45 AM. Classes begin in September 2026 and run through May 2027. Full class schedule will be sent to families after completing the registration form below and paying the class registration fee.
Class Location
Studio 1 is located at 915 Broadway in downtown Tacoma, between the Pantages Theater box office and Theater on the Square.
Class Materials
Students will need to rent or purchase their own instrument, and obtain an instrument-specific copy of Essential Elements Book 1 for Strings. Please purchase the edition that has an image of a string instrument on the cover, not the one that is red with two interlocking E’s! Supplemental materials will be provided by TYSA if needed.
Showcase Performances
Prelude Strings students will present their hard work in two show-and-tell concerts in December and May. The final concert in May will be held in the historic Rialto Theater.
Registration and Tuition
Please submit your registration for Prelude Strings by September 3rd. When registering, please pay your $75 registration fee/deposit to secure your spot. Tuition is $115.00 per month September through April. Scholarships are available for Prelude Strings students. Please submit the scholarship application by August 15.
Once you have registered your child below, please send in the $75 registration fee through the “Make a Payment” page in order to reserve a spot for your young musician, and check your email (provided in your application) for further information.
