Why study music theory?
Music theory is the study of ideas that help us understand, analyze, and create music. In other words, it explains what music does and what’s going on when we hear it. Music theory defines the elements that form harmony, melody, and rhythm, identifies compositional elements (such as notes, chords, tempo, key signatures, intervals, scales, and song forms), and explains musical qualities (such as pitch, tone, timbre, texture, dynamics, and more).
The Theory 0.5 class, designed for our TSS and TYVP students, incorporates lots of practice and games in order to teach beginners the language of music. Theory 1 and 2 progressively teach students to understand how music is put together from a theoretical viewpoint. Music theory classes are open to TYSA students, parents, and anyone in the community who wishes to explore music theory!
